Description

The MKTs microcrystalline cellulose (eng.Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC) is cleared, partially depolimerizovanny cellulose, represents white or almost white, flavourless and taste the crystal powder consisting of porous particles. Grades of microcrystalline cellulose differ in the size of particles and moisture content, respectively having various properties and a scope

Microcrystalline cellulose (MKTs) is widely applied as binding substance in tablet compoundings:

MKTs - 101 - an excellent indicator of density of pressing, is recommended for a damp granulation;

MKTs - 102 - high quality of pressing and flowability, is recommended for direct pressing;
MKTs - 200 - a grade with a large size of particles, is suitable for direct pressing;
MKTs - 301 - on properties is similar to a grade 101, but with the increased bulk density;
MKTs - 302 - on properties is similar to a grade 102, but with the increased bulk density;

MKTs - UL-002 - a special grade of microcrystalline cellulose with the increased properties of pressing, allows to improve compounding density with the smaller force of compression, and also to reduce the tablet size.

Microcellulose is the most important component of food fibers therefore microcrystalline cellulose (most often a grade 102) can be used as additive - a source of fibers in food production.

Production of microcrystalline cellulose (MKTs) is based on alpha cellulose processing by mineral acids (usually hydrochloric acid), with the subsequent neutralization, repeated washing, a filtration and drying. As a result the white powder without taste and a smell consisting of the porous agglomerated particles turns out. If when drying the technology of raspylitelny drying that is applied, the agglomerates having the form as close as possible to spherical that positively influences flowability of a product as a result turn out. The microcrystalline cellulose received thus generally is used as binding excipient. Besides, MKTs can be used as a filler in technology of a damp granulation, as a filler for capsules.

In the market of excipients for pharmaceutical production there is a microcrystalline cellulose produced under various trademarks. Depending on the size of particles, bulk density there are grades marked by figures: 101, 102, 200, 302, 302 and others. The most often used and universal grade of MKTs - 101, finds application both in direct pressing, and for a damp granulation. MKTs 102 has the same size of particles, but smaller dispersion therefore improves loose properties of a compounding more effectively.

MKTs with larger sizes of particles (302, 301) have the best fluidity, but smaller indicators of pressing. Durability of the turning-out tablets usually grows with increase in the size of particles of microcrystalline cellulose. There are data that the tablets containing MKTs 101 have higher fragility and smaller time of disintegration whereas the same compounding with MKTs 102, has smaller fragility and also smaller time of disintegration. MKTs 12 shows the best uniformity on structure in comparison with a grade 102.

The optimum grade of microcrystalline cellulose needs to be selected experimentally, depending on the specific objective facing the technologist.

Microcrystalline cellulose as binding has some shortcomings:

the turning-out tablets can be sensitive to moisture.

at a high speed of tabletting of a compounding with MKTs compoundings on the basis of calcium phosphate are more inclined to adhesion, than, for example.

The important characteristic of microcrystalline cellulose is the quantity of "black points" (foreign inclusions). These inclusions are harmless and are not toxic and represent products of deeper hydrolysis of cellulose proceeding when processing a pulp hydrochloric acid. However existence of "black points" as a part of microcrystalline cellulose leads to emergence of black spots on a surface of a ready tablet that is the reason of rejection. Unfortunately, completely it is impossible to avoid their education, however carrying out hydrolysis in the sparing conditions allows to reduce the number of foreign inclusions in a ready-made product to a minimum.
