Systems for the efficient use of solar energy

Every year, the sun provides all the energy the world needs many times over - free of charge and without damaging the environment. Canada gets between three to five kW/hr per square metre per day of direct sunlight. This massive potential should not remain untapped, especially given that global oil and gas supplies are becoming scarcer and that climate change is affected by excessive CO2 emissions.

In buildings, the sun's energy can be used with thermal or photovoltaic systems to generate heat or power. Solar thermal systems should form an integral part of every heating system, both in new and existing buildings. A solar thermal system can cover around 60 of the energy required for heating DHW in a year. Energy can also be saved by using solar heat for central heating backup. This means that up to 35% of the annual energy demand for central and DHW heating can be provided using free solar energy.
